The Cherry Is On My Cake

Robert Redford

As far as the history of modern men's fashion is concerned, no decade has been as adventurous and experimental as the 1970s.

After years of a style dominated by classic suits and dark colors, suddenly the male wardrobe gains color (and life). They become expressive, vibrant and luxurious.

Obviously there were mishaps along the way. Notice those terrible platform shoes.

But all this vibe was part of the experimentalism of the time, where men were not afraid to wear anything, as long as it attracted attention.

Celebrities such as Elton John, Marvin Gaye and Mick Jagger and David Bowie (referring to just a few) adopted this style of overt approach, where velvet suits and unbuttoned shirts (up to the navel) and improbable blends of colors and patterns were commonplace.

In a more classic line of the 70s, we find icons of style that remain to this day Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Yves Saint Laurent and Robert Redford.

Hair was plentiful, thick mustaches, and Studio 54 in New York was the "place" where people wanted to be (and be seen).

This dusty and "shameless" attitude in men's fashion has seen a revival in designers such as Alessandro Michele from Gucci, Tom Ford and Hedi Slimane (currently at Céline).

Below, some of the icons of this decade, as well as the pieces that have been looking for references to the 70s and that in 2018 return to trend, are inspired.

O restaurante Public Kitchen, sob o comando do chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, também reflete a tendência do momento: comida orgânica e saudável.

______________

In the heart of Manhattan, in the Lower East Side, was born less than a year ago, one of the hotspots of the city that never sleeps. It's called Public Hotel and it's the space of the moment, which is not surprising considering that it was born from an idea by Ian Schrager, founder of the legendary Studio 54.

Designed by the Swiss architects Herzog & De Meuron, it offers an elegant and modern aesthetic, using polished concrete, bamboo and wood. But not only! Mirrors, tinted glass and neon also stand out and make a difference. The escalators, which take guests from the ground floor to the lobby, follow this aesthetic and are considered their trademark.

The multiple common spaces also characterize it, having been specifically designed to foster interaction between people. An example of this is the entrance garden, which is surprisingly quiet; the large flower-filled terrace at the back; and its three bars, which have large tables, sofas and benches, and which are open to the public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

A curious aspect of Public is that it has eliminated strange elements from the traditional hotel experience. For example, there is no reception and guests check in by mobile phone or on iPads available upon arrival.

The Public Kitchen restaurant, under chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, also reflects the trend of the moment: organic and healthy food.

It is also worth mentioning Carlos Quirarte and Matt Kliegman's Public Arts multimedia performance space, which is one of the references of the Public Hotel. It is designed for exhibitions, cinema sessions, lectures and even can become a dance floor.

Public also has a bar on the 18th floor which offers fabulous 360 degree views. In fact, this bar contributes greatly to make this hotel one of the most trendy spots in the Big Apple.

That said, even if your accommodation option for New York is different, a visit to this space is mandatory!
