Para melhor explorar a ilha do Faial - Açores e os seus encantadores cantos e recantos, a melhor opção é alugarem um carro.
Depois de alguma pesquisa, descobri a Ilha Verde rent-a-car. Os preços são super competitivos e as opções de carros também.
Visitei praias, uma fábrica de queijos (em vez de ímans, as lembranças que trouxe foram queijos), igrejas e paisagens de tirar o fôlego.
O fator "sorte" também ajudou. Apanhei dias ótimos de sol e bom tempo (nada de chuva!).
Um dos meus momentos favoritos desta viagem, foi quando fui para alto mar ver baleias e golfinhos (também consegui ver uma tartaruga gigante).
O programa foi organizado pela Naturalist Science & Tourism. A aventura foi preparada por biólogas da Universidade de Lisboa. Ao mesmo tempo que fazem as visitas aos animais marinhos, investigam.
Para além de ter aprendido uma série de coisas novas sobre os animais marinhos, também fiquei a saber aspetos muito interessantes sobre a fauna e flora da ilha do Faial.

Infelizmente, não tenho fotos para vos mostrar. Como estávamos em alto mar, de vez em quando éramos salpicados por ondas e não foi aconselhado levar máquinas fotográficas/ telemóveis.

To better explore Faial Island - Azores and its charming nooks and crannies the best option is to rent a car.
After some research I discovered the Ilha Verde rent-a-car . Prices are super competitive and the car options too.
I visited beaches, a cheese factory (instead of magnets, the souvenirs I brought were cheeses), churches and breathtaking landscapes.
The "luck" factor also helped. I caught sunny days and good weather (no rain!).
One of my favorite moments of this trip was when I went to the high seas to see whales and dolphins (I also got to see a giant tortoise).
The program was organized by Naturalist Science & Tourism. The adventure was organized by biologists from the University of Lisbon. At the same time as they make the visits to the marine animals, they investigate.
In addition to learning a lot of new things about marine animals, I also learned very interesting aspects about the fauna and flora of Faial Island.

Unfortunately, I have no photos to show you. As we were on the high seas, we were occasionally dotted with waves and it was not advisable to take cameras / mobile phones.
A manhã da subida ao Pico, nos Açores, começou com um difícil acordar, passavam poucos minutos das 5h.
Depois de tomado o pequeno-almoço, rumámos junto ao barco que faz a ligação entre a ilha do Faial e a do Pico. A viagem demorou cerca de 30 minutos e foi fabuloso ver o nascer do dia.
A seguir, fomos até à casa da montanha (no Pico), onde vimos um vídeo informativo e nos foi dado um GPS para o caso de alguma coisa correr mal (felizmente, não foi necessário).
Tivemos também de pagar 12,5€ para podermos subir.
Confesso que nunca tinha feito nada do género. Por isso, foi tudo uma novidade.
Entre a subida e a descida, foram mais de 10h, com várias paragens pelo meio.
Senti vertigens umas três ou quatro vezes e tive vontade de desistir outras tantas. Numa dessas vezes, estava na reta final da subida, a uns 70m do topo, onde o terreno era bastante íngreme e acidentado e pensei que não era capaz.
Entretanto, enchi-me de coragem e lá fui.
A vista a 2351m de altura é absolutamente arrasadora. Sentimo-nos nas nuvens, literalmente. O ar é tão puro que nos dá uma sensação enorme de liberdade. A frase "I´m on the top of the world" não podia encaixar melhor.
Acredito muito que devemos sair das nossas zonas de conforto. Que devemos arriscar, ir mais além, reinventarmo-nos as vezes que forem precisas, mas nem sempre é fácil fazê-lo.
Esta foi uma saída em grande da minha zona de conforto. Uma saída difícil a nível físico e psicológico, mas enriquecedora e inesquecível ao mesmo tempo. Penso que me vou recordar disto o resto da vida.
A descida foi difícil. Muito difícil. Porque tinha acumuladas todas as horas e esforço da subida e porque, ironia das ironias, fiquei sem uma sola de uma bota. E, passado 1h e pouco, sem a outra.
Desci mais de metade do percurso com solas de pele lisa. Foi terrível! Por isso, lembrem-se sempre: levar calçado adequado!
Quando cheguei cá a baixo, estava exausto, desidratado e com os pés cheios de bolhas.
No dia seguinte, acho que me doíam todos os músculos do corpo. Mas o balanço final é positivo. Valeu a pena.
Caso estejam a ponderar fazer algo do género não se esqueçam de levar: água, pensos rápidos, sandes e barras energéticas, calçado adequado, protetor solar, boné e roupa leve.

The morning of Pico climbing, in Azores, began with a difficult waking up (it passed few minutes of 5 am in the morning when I got up).
After breakfast, we headed to the boat that connects the islands of Faial and Pico. The trip took about 30 minutes and it was fabulous to see the sunrise.
Then we went to the mountain house (at Pico), where we saw an informative video and were given a GPS in case something went wrong (thankfully, it was not necessary).
We also had to pay € 12,5 so we could go up.
I confess I had never done anything like it. So it was all new for me.
Between the ascent and the descent, it was more than 10h, with several stops in the middle.
I felt dizzy three or four times and I wanted to give up so many times. At one of those times, I was on the final stretch of the ascent, some 70m of steep rugged terrain and I thought I was not capable to do it.
However, I was filled with courage and went there.
The view at 2351m high is absolutely overwhelming. We feel in the clouds, literally. The air was so pure it gives us an enormous sense of freedom. The phrase "I'm on the top of the world" could not fit better.
I very much believe we should get out of our comfort zones. That we must take risks, go further, reinvent ourselves as often as necessary, but it is not always easy to do.
This was a big way out of my comfort zone. A difficult exit on a physical and psychological level, but enriching and unforgettable at the same time. I think I'll remember this for the rest of my life.
The descent was difficult. Very difficult. Because I had accumulated all the hours and effort of the climb and because, irony of the ironies, I was without a sole of a boot. And, past 1h and something, without the other.
I descended more than half the course with smooth skin soles. It was terrible! So always remember to wear the right shoes!
When I got down, I was exhausted, dehydrated, and my feet were full of blisters.
The next day I think every muscle in my body ached. But the bottom line is positive. Worth it.
If you are considering doing something like this do not forget to bring: water, band aid, sandwiches and energy bars, adequate footwear, sunscreen, cap and light clothing.
